The Gardening Pixie philosophy

Wildlife

All our gardens added together in the UK are 4.5 times larger than our National Nature Reserves*. We can make a huge impact on the wild life. By encouraging in birds and the frogs the slugs and snails that delight in a Hosta salad are dealt with without the use of chemicals.

A tiny amount of water can transform a garden with frog and birds visiting. I love watching the birds cue up on the apple tree for a quick scrub and brush up in the pond.

Soil

By feeding and looking after the soil plants get stronger and as well as giving us joy they won’t need spraying because they are healthier. By using a hot compost bin we reduce the amount of landfill and know if we don’t use chemicals then the soil is being fed by good quality compost.

I try to work with local nurseries who specialise in plants suitable for the local soil and are wild life friendly. For example the really wonderful herbaceous perennials from Martin at Histon Plants. They look great in their first year but really come into their stride in the second and third year.

Situation

Right plant, right place is also true and this is where a planting plan for your soil and aspect can save money and resources. We all have been to a garden centre and bought a plant because it was pretty to watch it wither. Much better to wait in anticipation each year to see it return happier and brighter because it is enjoying its new home and companions!
